April 24 Committee

for the recognition and commemoration of the Armenian Genocide of 1915

The 24 April Committee is an organ of the Federation of Armenian Organisations in The Netherland (FAON)

Federation of Armenian Organisations in Netherlands (FAON)
24 April Committee for the recognition and commemoration of the Armenian Genocide of 1915

ANNOUNCEMENT
95th anniversary of Armenian Genocide
Demonstration in The Hague and Commemoration in Assen

Within the framework of 95th anniversary commemoration of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the 24 April Committee of the FAON is organising two activities, with the aim to commemorate the 1.5 million victims of the Genocide of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks and to give a strong signal of Armenian Community in Holland about the fact that after 95 years the Armenian Genocide is still denied and trivialised in a repulsive way by Turkey and even speaking about it in Turkey is still punishable.

  • On 20 April 2010 a rally and demonstration organised by the “Joint Armenian Organisations of the Netherlands” will be held in The Hague, where a petition will be submitted to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Dutch Parliament.
  • On 24 April 2010, a commemoration ceremony will take place at the Armenian memorial in Assen, organised by 24 April Committee of FAON.

The 24 April Committee of FAON calls on everybody to participate in these actions to support our demand for the commemoration and recognition of the Armenian Genocide and to commemorate respectfully the 1.5 million victims.

Please note down these dates and forward this information to your family, friends and to all those for whom the Armenian question is important.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Rally and demonstration on 20 April 2010 at 12.30 p.m. in The Hague

The 24 April Committee of FAON and the Hay Tad Holland cooperating as “Joint Armenian Organisations of the Netherlands” are holding a rally and demonstration in The Hague to mark the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The demonstration is intended to enforce:

  • The requirement that Turkey recognises the Armenian Genocide
  • Implementation of the Rouvoet’s Parliamentary Motion from 2004, which asks the Dutch government to put constantly and expressly on the agenda the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey
  • The need to establish a memorial in The Hague, city of international law, for commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide, as an example of how the international community should not handle such disastrous events.

Dutch politicians Kees van der Staaij (SGP) and Harry van Bommel (SP) and others will address the rally.
A petition of cooperating Armenian Organisations will be Submitted to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Dutch Parliament.

Date: Tuesday, 20 April 2010 at 12.30 p.m.

Call for a demonstration on 20 April 2010 in The Hague, The Netherlands

The 24 April Committee of FAON and the Hay Tad Holland cooperating as "Joint Armenian Organisations of the Netherlands" intend to organise a commemorative demonstration to mark the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Hereby we call on all other Armenian organisations and all Armenians in the Netherlands for a massive demonstration to enforce our claims for recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey and for implementation of the Motion by Rouvoet by the Dutch government. This Motion has been adopted unanimously by the Dutch Parliament in 2004.

The demonstration will take place in Het Plein square, The Hague, The Netherlands on Tuesday, 20 April 2010 at 12:30 p.m.

It is of utmost importance that we, as the Armenian community in the Netherlands, give a strong signal to show our horror about the Armenian Genocide and about the fact that after 95 years the Genocide is still denied and trivialised in a repulsive way by Turkey and even speaking about it in Turkey is still punishable.

Although there is an extensive recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the international community does not effectively succeed to make clear to Turkey that the pattern of denial and trivialisation is unacceptable and to take the appropriate measures for preventing this practice.

This same attitude of the world made it possible that in 1915 the Armenian Genocide could take place under the eyes of the world.

It is therefore important that we work together to commemorate this 95th anniversary. We call on everyone to participate in the joint demonstration in The Hague, the city of international law!

Together we can make a stand against injustice.

HOLLAND DOC: THE COUNTRY OF OUR GRANDPARENTS

A travel along Armenian Genocide Memories

These road movie leads to Eastern Turkey, in search of tracks that even today still testify of the Armenian Genocide (1915-1916). Central figure of the film is the young Turkish Dutch scholar Ugur Üngör (28). He does postgraduate research on Armenian Genocide. He found out duing his studies a book of Vahram Goekjian. Vahram survived as a young person the Genocide and wrote his story in a book. Üngör’s travel partner is the scenario writer Alexander Goekjian (36), the grandchild of Vahram. He has been connected inextricably with the destiny of the Armenians in Eastern Turkey via his grandfather. The scenario writer and the researcher travel together to the area where the Goekjian family lived for centuries: Kozan in Eastern Turkey. Film director Kay Mastenbroek follows them with a second camera for the `making of”. He records especially scenes when tensions arise by curious questions of Ugur and Alexander to the local authorities, but also among the Turkish and Armenian filmmakers’ team.

The film shows a number of historical places, which are of great importance in the history of the Armenian Genocide. There are documents in the Turkish capital Ankara, which prove the involvement of the Turkish government in the Genocide. The road leads also to Erzincan, the birthplace of Ugur Üngör. Here he heard from his grandfather for the first time that the Genocide of the Armenians had effectively taken place. Up to that time he was, such as the most Turks, a ‘mild denialist’ of the Genocide. In Zimara Goekjian and Üngör try to reconstruct the history of the prosecution of the Armenians, which would lead finally to a massacre in the Euphrates and at the banks of the Lake Hazar. The remains of the largest Armenian church of Eastern Turkey, a silent witness of the past, are deeply hidden in the labyrinths of the old centre of the ‘Kurdish capital’ Diyarbakir. In Kozan Goekjian and Üngör are looking for the house where Alexander’s grandfather was born.

Because of the obstinate denial of the Armenian Genocide by the Turkish government, the filmmakers have to be careful with their behaviour during the whole travel. Also a dispute arises between Üngör and Turkish members of the filmmakers' team, who cannot appreciate the continuing critical remarks of Üngör on their homeland. Travel ends in Izmir, where in 1922 Vahram Goekjian escaped the Turkish soldiers and was rescued by the last refugee ship. Izmir is the place for Goekjian and Üngör to assess how important is their grandparents past for them? And what is for them the meaning of the history of the people, with whom they will always have ties?

An Armenian History

Dutch TV programme on 23 March 2006

The Story of My Name
An Armenian History

When: Thursday 23 March 2006, at 10:58 p.m.

Where: NL-TV Channel 1 (Nederland 1)

Programme: Alex Luijten (1955) is 19 years old when he gets to know his biological father, an Armenian living in France. Luijten was raised in The Hague, but is now living on the isle of Terschelling, off the northern coast of Holland, and still working `at the shore.' He is a multi-sided entrepreneur, but also the head of a primary school in Kijkduin. At the age of 44, he decides to take on his father's family name - Alex Luijten becomes Alex Peltekian - a new name with a foreign flavor. He then decides to find out the story behind it.

After his father's death, papers and deeds emerge in France revealing that the Peltekians used to be a wealthy family in Turkey, at least until World War One, when Turkey proceeded to rid herself of her Armenian minority. The survivors of Alex's branch of the family ended up in France.

Alex learns about the existence of Peltekians in Lebanon and gradually becomes more interested in the story behind his name. In the film, the quest brings him via Beirut to the Turkish town of Dörtyol in the Hatay Province, where his father was born in 1912. The Peltekian family had property everywhere.

Can his grandfather's orange plantation still be found? Does anyone still remember the Peltekians? And what happened to the family's estate? Alex's journey leads to remarkable and, occasionally, tense encounters with the present inhabitants of Dörtyol.

The Armenian Genocide

Debate and Lecture at Erasmus University Rotterdam

Studium Generale of Erasmus University Rotterdam organises a debate on the Armenian Genocide in historical and international legal perspective on 16 March 2006 and a lecture on the Armenian identity in European perspective on 22 March 2006.

I. Thursday 16 March 2006

Date: Thursday 16 March 2006

Time: 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

What: Debate: The Armenian Genocide
in historical and international legal perspective

Panel: Dr. Ton Zwaan (Centre for Genocide Studies and University of Amsterdam),
Harry van Bommel (MP - Socialist Party faction) and Prof. Dr. Fred Grünfeld(professor of Causes of Human Rights Violations, University of Utrecht, and International and European Law, University of Maastricht).
Panel Chairman: Drs. Cock van Horzen (Faculty of the Art and Historical Sciences, Erasmus University Rotterdam).

Also will be present Timur Erogluer, active at the Utrecht College (namely
Middle East History)

Where: Erasmus University Rotterdam
Compound Woudestein, Room LB-107
Burgemeester Oudlaan 50 - Rotterdam

Topic: Since a process was hanging above the head of the Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk for insulting Turkish State, because he mentioned ‘the massacre of one million Armenians’, the Armenian question revived again. What has exactly happened
in that period (1915-1916) during World War I, when the Ottoman Empire was seriously in decline?
Although many European countries, among them the
Netherlands, and the European Parliament have recognised this Genocide as such, the issue is almost taboo in Turkey. Will this remain in this way, given the possible accession of Turkey to Europe? What is the purpose of recognition for the perpetrator and victims of the Genocide, so many years later?

Art: At the start of the discussion evening Mrs. Stephanie Benzaquen (Jan
van Eyck Academy, Maastricht) will show digital images with historical
material on the Armenian and other genocides.

Admission: Free

Info: Department Studium Generale, Tel. +31104081144

II. Wednesday 22 March 2006

What:
Lecture: The Armenian identity
in European perspective

Lecturer:
Prof. Dr. Jos Weitenberg (Armenologist, Literature Faculty Leiden)

Where: Erasmus University Rotterdam
Compound Woudestein, Room B-2
Burgemeester Oudlaan 50 - Rotterdam

Topic: Armenian culture has often developped parallel to the modern European cultural history. How was the development of Armenia from the 17th century up to present?
In this lecture the emphasis will lie on the existance and the
formation of the Armenian identity as a result of the contact with Islam and with European cultural trends. The topic will cover Armenia and European Enlightenment, Armenian nationalism, the Armenian Genocide and the position of Armenians within the former Soviet Union.

Misc: Coctail after the lecture

Admission: Free
