Commemoration of 90th anniversary of Armenian Genocide in the Netherlands

It was ninety years ago that an entire people was annihilated in its own country. This does not concern one or two persons, neither a district, a village nor a city; it concerns the entire Armenian population of West Armenia that was deported and brutally eradicated by the Young Turkish government according to a plan drawn up in advance. The "civilised" governments watched and were silent, and as a result gave the Turkish criminals green light to carry out massacres. The silence of the same governments has itself, unfortunately, continued from Lausanne to Brussels, from 1915 to 2005, whereby the consecutive Turkish governments were given the opportunity to deny this crime. We are glad that in the meantime the highest political body of the Netherlands, the House of Representatives, following other countries, officially recognised the Armenian genocide on 21 December 2004.

The Armenian people were victimised, but not defeated. The handful of Armenians who escaped the Turkish sword, without a home, without a country, were forced to spread across the world. "There is no Armenian question, because there are no Armenians", the Young Turkish assassins proudly called out. But the Armenian people revived and booked new successes in both the small and weak Armenia or in the diaspora, and proved once again its strong will to live.

Today, 90 years after the Genocide, the Armenian people must firmly and harmoniously struggle for the realisation of their legitimate rights. Only with united effort will it be possible to reach our goals.

The April 24 Committee of the Federation of Armenian Organisations in the Netherlands is aware of the importance of the commemoration of 90 years of the Armenian Genocide, and calls upon everyone for whom human dignity is important, to attend the commemoration ceremonies unanimously.

To honour the memory of 1.5 million victims of our people and for the renewal of our duty to continue the struggle for global recognition of the Armenian Genocide and for the realisation of our justified claims, the April 24 Committee has organised the following three events.
